Biological warfare is often touted as a great threat to modern society and it truly is. Of course, nature has come up with some pretty nasty stuff without human intervention. West Nile Virus definitely falls into this category.

Despite the name, West Nile Virus is in reality a form of Encephalitis. It is a virus that acts like an infection within the body. For most people, the disease has little or no impact on them, but it can be deadly for some.

How odd is the disease? Well, most people that are infected with it do not even know. There are no symptoms at all and the infection is eradicated naturally by the body within 10 days or so.

While most people get through the infection in 10 days, a minority fall into a near coma with fever, weakness, chills, sweating and general misery. Nausea can follow as well as gastrointestinal issues.

At this point, even the worst cases can break after ten days or so with the patient recovering. Still, a few will never recover. The infection will spread into the spinal cord and brain with death being likely.

Given the name, most people view West Nile Virus as one of those health threats that are third world countries. While this is true, many first world countries have the problem. The United States is certain included in this group.

West Nile became a known threat in the United States in 1999. Over the next few years, deaths attributed to the virus could be counted in the single digits. In 2002, the number jumped to 284 and roughly 100 have died every year since then.

Surviving West Nile is all about not getting it. While birds carry it around the world, mosquitoes actually infect humans. How? The mosquitoes bite both birds and humans, which transfers the virus.

This behooves you to take steps to limit your exposure to mosquitoes. First, get rid of sitting water around your home. That is where mosquitoes breed. Second, wear natural mosquito repellent that will keep the disease spreaders off of you.

Even if you are not concerned about West Nile, you should be trying to eliminate mosquitoes in your area. They transport all kinds of nasty diseases that can cause misery and death.

GenoMed, a genomics-based Disease Management company in St. Louis, has had encouraging results treating West Nile virus encephalitis since 2003.

We’ve had about 80% treatment success rate in people (23 of 29 improved) and horses (8 of 10 survived), and 50% in birds (6 of 12 survived). Our first 8 human WNV patients were published in a peer-reviewed medical journal in 2004 (1). This is sufficient for our treatment to officially exist in both the medical and legal senses.

The earlier our treatment is begun, the better the outcome.

Anybody who wants to download our WNV trial protocol can do so for free at any time by clicking on the “West Nile trial” link on our company’s homepage at http://www.genomed.com.
