Dust Mites. What are they? Are they living? How many are there in my house? What do they eat? Why are people allergic to them? There are many questions pertaining to dust mites, however very little people know anything about these creatures that exist almost everywhere. I am going to go over a few questions and answers that concern dust mites.

How Would Someone Define Dust Mites? The existence of dust mites is obvious to many, yet only a small percentage of the population know anything else about dust mites. Dust mites are animals that stem from the arachnid or spider branch and even have 8 legs like a spider. They eat, breathe, and defecate similar to any other animal. A male dust mite will live for approximately 30 days, while a female dust mite’s life span will double a male’s life span by about 60 days. Within the entirety of a female dust mite’s life span, the dust mite will create and lay approximately 100 eggs.

How Large is a Dust Mite? Not very large at all, in fact a dust mite is not visible to the human eye; the only way to view a dust mite is through a powerful magnifying glass or microscope. The approximated size of a dust mite is half a millimeter large.

What is the Number of Dust Mites which Inhabit my House and where exactly do they reside? Due to everyone’s unique house set up, it is impossible to determine an exact amount of dust mites living within a person’s household; within a typical mattress millions of dust mites live and thrive. Dust mites take residence in a variety of places in your house including your pillows, sheets, blankets, chairs, carpets, and couches.

Why Do They Live In Bed and Couch of All Places? Dust mites enjoy places with a high amount of humidity and they receive that humidity when you perspire, breathe or drool. They also like to go into places where they are not exposed to the sun or vacuum cleaner. They dig down deep into the carpeting and grab onto the carpet fibers to prevent them from getting sucked out by a vacuum cleaner or beat out by the brushroll.

What is a Dust Mites Food of Choice? You. Dust Mites feast on dead skin from humans. Hundreds of dust mites are adequately by a day’s worth of shedded skin from one human. This is also the reason dust mites live within carpets, couches, etc., because it provides easy access to their food source.

What is the Reason for calling them Dust Mites wouldn’t it Make More Sense to Call Them Skin Mites? A large percentage of dust consists of dead skin. The dust you find in the attic, basement, on top of your television set is mostly dead skin. For this reason dust mites feed on dust, because dust is mostly dead skin.
