ADHD Sleep Disorders - Children and Adults Who Can’t Sleep

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common behavioral conditions among children today. According to studies, about 80% of those children and adults who are suffering from this type of behavioral disorder have difficulty sleeping.

The same source also suggests that ADHD sleep disorders are amongst the top 10 reasons as to why people struggle to sleep at night. The failure to sleep is made even more frustrating as some individuals spend 2 to 3 hours in bed before they actually fall asleep.

In most cases, the stress of not being able to sleep right away trigger other forms of psychological and physiological imbalance in the person. He or she may then becomes prone to depression and other forms of mental problems. Although scientists and researchers are still conducting further studies into the causes of ADHD sleep disorder and there are still no concrete scientific explanations as to what causes this type of behavioral disorder.

Some of the reasons put forth for the causes of ADHD sleep disorders are related to the preservatives and synthetic additives contained in the food we eat. It is believed that these additives can contribute to side effects such as hyperactivity in young children.

What Do You Need To Do To Cope With ADHD Sleep Disorder?

If your child is having difficulty focusing on his or her task and he or she is having so much trouble getting some sleep, it would be better for you to consult your doctor. Do not just assume that your child has ADHD sleep disorder if you can’t sleep. According to studies, ADHD is not the only cause for lack of sleep, so do not jump into conclusions right away and request for some tests.

Always remember that insomnia is a complex thing and may be caused by a combination of factors. The only way to determine the factors that caused insomnia in your child is to consult a doctor who is specializing in sleep disorders.

If your child is diagnosed as having an ADHD sleep disorder the first thing on your mind should be talking to a specialist Physician about the remedies available to you. There are a number of options one of which is the use of drugs and this may be recommended by your Physician.

Should the Doctor offer the use of drugs as a possible way forward then you need to discuss with him or her the possible side effects of using them. Causing more problems that the issues that you have to deal with currently is not a way forward that is wanted.

Ask your doctor how you can help your child relax and focus on his or her tasks. Note that as a parent, you are in the best position to help your child go through this situation and find solutions to the problem.
