Stop smoking aids are ‘big business’ the world over. There are literally hundreds of solutions to every smokers desire to quit. Every smoker has thought about quitting at some point and almost every one of them has some idea of what aid they would use to help them.

But with so many ‘guaranteed’ options available, how does one choose the best stop smoking aid? Well, invariably, you do what most people do and choose to remain a smoker.

One could argue that all you need to do is pick one type of aid, try it and if it doesn’t work then move on to the next one. I guess if it was that easy and feasible to do so more people would stop.

It definitely isn’t easy to quit but it is simple. There isn’t some magic pill or gum or stop smoking spray. The intention for the most part with a quit smoking aid is to get you on the path to recovery. The best place to start is with the most popular offerings.

1. Nicotine Chewing Gum

Nicotine gum was the first stop smoking aid to be marketed. For many heavy smokers, the higher volume gum is needed to help curb the real, hard attacks that come from nicotine. These gums are subsequently produced in both two milligram doses and four milligram doses, the latter being used for smokers that need that extra kick in the right direction.

2. Nicotine Lozenges

The nicotine lozenge is one of the newest forms of quit smoking aids. It is a sugar-free hard sweet that you suck slowly in order to release the nicotine. It is similar to nicotine chewing gum, in that the nicotine is absorbed through the lining of the mouth and absorbed into the bloodstream. It is also available in 2 or 4mg.

3. The Quit Smoking Patch

Having the patch can produce results and can be used day to day without realizing that nicotine cravings are slowly being drawn from the body. For some people, a busy day gives them no time to stop and look for gum or lozenges and may produce extra concern when dealing with people all day.

For those people who have a nicotine addiction to smokeless tobacco, all of these stop smoking aids will also work. Many people who use smokeless tobacco find that the nicotine gum works the best. The gum can be chewed and then be put in between the cheek and gum for the feel of the tobacco.

Remember that the point of quit smoking aids is to quit smoking. If one aid doesn’t work for you don’t give up and go back to smoking and don’t use it as an excuse. Just try another quit aid. Your life depends on it.

One reason why it is so difficult to quit smoking is that every smoker is connected to their cigarettes in a different way. Some are more physically addicted than others. A smoker that is smoking less than 10 cigarettes a day often doesn’t seem as physically addicted as someone who smokes 40 a day but those 10 are just as important to that particular smoker. Every method to quit will work for some, no method works for every smoker. The key is finding the right combination of behavior modification, medicinal support, and emotional and stress coping strategies that work for the individual, along with assessing indiviudal desires, beliefs and fears.
